Overwatch 2 Season 3 Brings Changes to Competitive Mode: Re-Ranking, Skill-Based Matchmaking, UI Updates
Overwatch 2 Season 3 is approaching with changes to its Competitive Mode. The number of wins and losses required for re-ranking is being reduced to 5 wins and 15 losses, and players will be matched with others of similar skill within each role. A mid-season update in Season 3 will improve the user interface to show progress toward re-ranking, and high-level players will see updates to their Top 500 leaderboard after each match.
In Season 4, starting April, the seasonal competitive rank resets and rank decay will be removed, allowing player ranks to better reflect their skill level after placement matches. The previous approach of setting players at a lower rank to give room for improvement is being reevaluated by Team 4.
A full reset of player skill levels is unlikely in Overwatch 2 Season 3. The system’s knowledge about millions of players, most of whom have never played against each other, would be lost. The matchmaking rating depends on whether players win or lose, and improvements to match quality for high MMR players are in the works.
Hero balance tweaks and changes to Ultimate charge, such as retaining 25% charge when switching heroes, are among other updates in Season 3. The Overwatch 2 team will address player concerns about the reward system and unlocking items, according to game director Aaron Keller.
